Chapter Eight
âKeep your friends close and your enemies closer,â I whispered into Kelâs ear.
âWhat?â the goblin girl whispered back.
Maddy Two-Socks was way up ahead of us out of earshot, scouting for any sign that the shadow slimes might have passed this way.
âI heard your warnings loud and clear about the risks of teaming up with a Rogue,â I told the Cleric in hushed tones. âAnd I totally share your concerns about that. But itâs much wiser to have Maddy adventuring with us, rather than just skulking around down here on her own somewhere in the shadows. Weâll be able to figure out if she really is a threat or not much easier that way.â
âOh, I get it now,â Kel whispered. Then she nodded, a sweet smile puffing up her plump cheeks.
Although I wasnât completely certain if that smile was because the goblin girl thought that I had made the right choice about teaming up with Maddy now, after I had explained my âfriends and enemiesâ reasoning to her. Or if it was because I still referred to Maddy as a potential threat.
Pretty frickinâ complicated, I thought.
But instead of dwelling on that, I put it out of my mind for now and focused on the task at hand.
Again, we were passing through an extremely narrow tunnel, headed deeper down into the bowels of the dungeon farm, looking for what Maddy had told us were sure-fire traces of shadow slimes.
Snail-like trails of black ooze on the floors and walls.
Tiny piles of chalky white ash in the corners.
And dead bunnies. Lots and lots of dead bunnies. Their big fat furry bodies all desiccated and husk-like.
âShadow slimes mainly eat bunnies,â Maddy had told us. âWell, âeatâ might not be exactly the right word for it. More like ⦠âabsorbâ them. The shadow slimes âabsorbâ the bunniesâ mana. And then they excrete this kind of chalky white ash. Which leaves a pretty discernible trail that one can follow. That plus that awful black ooze of theirs, which stinks like a fish market on a super-hot day.â
Although, I didnât smell any rotted fish.
Nor had I seen any tiny piles of white ash yet either.
Nor the desiccated bodies of dead bunnies. Which was starting to make me wonder if the fox-girl Rogue was actually leading us into some much more elaborate trap.
But why in the hell would she do that? Why would Maddy Two-Socks go through all the trouble of catching us in her net and then cutting us free, if she was just planning to trap us again all along?
Unless â¦
⦠she needed to gain our trust. So that we would freely go deeper into the dungeon with her, for example. Where she could betray us in a much more deadly way. Or perhaps even deliver us to somebody else?
Or ⦠two somebody elses.
My two awful cousins immediately came to mind. Evil Alistair and Dumb Jeff. I wouldnât put it passed them to organize something like this. Especially after I had beat the shit out of Jeff in his bugbear form and sent him packing.
